I love writing magical fantasy and fairy-tale novels with women over 30. Do you want to know why I write books and why my main characters are adults? And why the stories always start in our world?
Why do I write at all?
Just thinking about it makes me smile. No, it’s more than just a smile: I grin broadly from ear to ear and my heart expands. This is because for me, there’s hardly anything more beautiful than diving into my magical worlds and experiencing all the adventure. And the great thing is that when you read my books, I take you with me, whisk you away from everyday life, and bring hope and magic into your hearts.
But do the characters really have to be adults?
My clear answer is: Yes! Not because they necessarily behave so much more reasonably, not because the stories are so much more serious, or because I have anything against children and teenagers — I happen to have two fine specimens myself!
But we adults also need stories that get us dreaming. We also want to experience exciting adventures, to see that everything is still possible for us and that miracles and magic do not vanish with adulthood.
On the contrary! We adults need such adventures even more. We want to discover a secret portal, fly through the air on the back of a dragon or a witch’s broom, and encounter the love of our lives. We want to feel our hearts beat, feel the excitement, and know that anything is possible at any time, no matter how old we are.
But why do the stories always start in our world?
Quite simply: Because we — you and I — can imagine that it’s possible, that it can happen to us too.

If she already lived in the magical worlds, the story would be different. And above all, the feeling readers got from it would be completely different. The experience is for us! That’s why my stories always start in our world: So you can imagine that it could happen to you too.
Miracles, magic, and love also await us. That’s exactly why my books start in our world, and that’s exactly why the main characters are over 30 years old.
Give it a try and write to me afterwards to let me know how you liked the journey. jenny@jennyswan-com. I always love to hear from you.
Yours, Jenny Swan
